911
so it appears that everyone is having a moment of condolence and memory of 911, 2001.
when the event happened, i was still working at the sleep lab with, of course, swan barb. i am not sure what i did the night before 911, but i was having trouble waking up that morning. i was sleeping away, drooling or something, when my brother called. he screamed into the phone, "we are under attack!!!! the u.s. is under attack! did you see what happened?" i guess it was more of his screaming that shook me. i was like, what? what are you talking about? what happened?
then he told me that planes had flown into the world trade center towers. we were under attack.
i got out of bed and ran to the living room to watch the news. OH MY GOD. we still lived in hyde park at the time, just blocks away from the u of c. our friends who were still in school called up and completely freaked out and wanted to come over. soon, within half hour, our apartment already had a small group of gatherers, all staring at the tv. my roommate kate, who worked part time at the daley center at the time, was sent home and i went to pick her up from the L station.
then soon after the news update told us about another plane crashing just outside of pittsburgh. i freaked out again because even though my brother was interning at AMD in austin that year, the crash would've been too close to carnegie mellon for comfort!
it was a moment when we felt truly hopeless. watching the disasters struck and evacuation/rescue started, there was nothing we could do. i have moved on very well, as i am good at putting unhappy things behind me very quickly. today at the kappa psi meeting they showed us a slide show in memory of 911, and i was again reminded of the event. i hope whoever suffered any loss or was strongly affected by the event can successfully move on and live their lives the best they can.
