is it my fault?
ugh! what a boring day at work yesterday. i havent really had to work mid-afternoon since this summer and dude, i didnt really remember the afternoon shifts to be so boring. it was so boring; i was so bored yesterday that i wish i were dead. uuuughhhhh!! it was so slooooooooooooooooow until like 6pm or so. i actually thought the evening rush was fun! whats wrong with me! i guess i am cursed with blessings to be busy all the time.
another intersting starbucks issue came up "again" yesterday. anywho, so when i first started, they like to put me on the register cuz new partners are slower and you dont want people to wait forever to receive their drinks once they place their order. (um, but in our case, people still have to wait forever sometimes just cuz we do get really really busy!) anywho, NOW i am speedy christine, they still like to put me on register sometimes cuz,
now tips issues. basia and i have discussed this multiple times. why *tip* at starbucks? its a cafe run by multi million dollar corporation and my store brings in over 25,000 dollars per week easy. recent wks its been closer to 40,000. its not one those stupid fat-me-up cafes in our college libraries run by hungry students!! i think its great for us provide a jar for people to throw in their unwanted change (some people really do *hate* carrying change) or for people that genuinely feel generous to give us money simply for talking to them/smiling at them/being at work!! thats all ok-- but it should never be an obligation nor should it be considered an "etiquette" to tip us.
two nights ago i was on bar and made a fabulous caramel macchiato for this dude. and he whipped out a dollar bill, put it on the counter in my face, and was like, hey this is for you, thanks! i was like, oh ok, thanks so much. why did he do that? and then yesterday, i was giving this guy back his change, 15 and some change. i gave him a 10 and a 5. he's like, the first thing they should've taught you is to give singles back so you could get tip. WTF!!! well yes, at a bar and restaurant, that's what a waiter and barter should do. i did NOT EVEN THINK that should i give him singles so he could tip. he then grabbed a dollar from his coat pocket and some change and threw them in the tip jar. then he said, remember to always give out singles cuz a guy could still tip even if he looks blue-collar! WTF!?!?!?!!?!? the guy had kinda a dusty shirt on and was probably some sort on-site engineer or electrician or construction worker. but omg, those thought never even came across my mind until he spoke them. i didnt know how i feel- i think i was kinda offended.
granted, even though i dont work much, the tips are enough for me to use as spending money if i were having a cheap, conservative week-- or a frou frou night out with the noverinis. but still, should there be a culture of tipping at starbucks????
